Finally Solving the Garbage Mystery

After having one of those Hikvision CCTV kits installed, I solved the mystery of who had been knocking over my garbage cans. For the past month, someone was knocking over my cans in the middle of the night and I would have to clean up the mess in the morning. I tried to stay up all night to catch the culprit, but I fell asleep. The culprit never came at the same time each night, making it difficult to predict when it would happen. I thought some crazy teenagers with nothing better to do were the ones behind it all, but it was something smaller.

The footage from the CCTV showed that a raccoon had been knocking over my garbage cans to search for food. It would slowly tip the cans to make as little sound as possible, and then start scratching at the bags inside the cans to get at the garbage on the inside. I was a little impressed with how clever the raccoon had been, but I was still annoyed that it was going through my garbage. I didn’t understand why it was only knocking over my garbage cans and leaving the other ones alone. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one in the neighborhood with edible garbage.

In an attempt to outsmart the raccoon, I put clamps on the garbage cans to keep the raccoon from prying them open, but the raccoon figured out how to remove them. My only other options were to catch the raccoon in a trap, or to just leave the garbage cans empty so the raccoon would stop expecting garbage to be in them. For one night, I did both. I placed a food trap next to the empty cans and went to bed. The next morning, the cans were tipped over, and the raccoon was stuck inside of the trap.
